He graduated from the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy in Belgrade in 1994, and completed his M.Sc. studies at the same Faculty in 1996 with the thesis titled Study of the conditions to produce adhesives from soy flour. In 2001, he took his Ph.D. degree at the Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy with the thesis Synthesis and Designing of the Structure and Properties of Hydroxyapatite-Polylactide Composite Biomaterial. He was elected a Research Associate in 2002 and a Senior Research Associate in 2005. Nenad L. Ignjatović holds the position of Professor at the Medical School of the University of Niš since 2007. Dr. Ignjatović was elected Principal Research Fellow in 2010. He is a correspondent member of the Academy of Engineering Sciences of Serbia since 2012.

While working at the Faculty of Forestry in 1995/96, his research was focused on obtaining wood glue from bio-sources, which resulted in a patent for which he was awarded a gold medal by the Yugoslav Society of Inventors and Innovators in 1997. Since March 1997, until the present, he has been employed at the Institute of Technical Sciences of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts as a researcher in the area of materials science. His research activities have been focused on the development of the relatively new scientific discipline within materials science: biomaterials. He was awarded for the best PhD thesis in 2001 by the Belgrade Chamber of Commerce.

Since 2001 until the present, he has been a visiting lecturer at the Petnica Science Centre on knowledge innovation programs with young talents in the field of biomaterials, introduced in 2001 as a new research discipline. He was an Academic Visitor at the Oxford University, Department of Materials in 2005. In 2007, he was a member of the ACS Adriatic Delegation of the United States. Based on achieved results in the field of biomaterials, namely in bone tissue engineering, he received the Belgrade City Award for natural and engineering sciences in 2008. He is a professor at doctoral studies in the field of biomedical engineering at the University of Belgrade (Multidisciplinary Studies) since 2010. Ignjatović was a national expert of bio-nano sciences in the centre of the European Commission (JRC, Italy) between 2012 and 2014. He has achieved international cooperation through partnership in scientific-research projects with several countries (Slovenia, German, French, South Korea, etc.). Ignjatović is a professor at doctoral studies at the University of Belgrade, School of Electrical Engineering (course: Physics, technology and characterization of biomaterials) since 2013. In the period 2019 to 2020 was hired as the World Bank expert within the project International Development Association in the form of credits toward the cost for Modernizing Higher Education Project (MHEP).

He was a member of the organizing committee of YUCOMAT Conferences between 1997 and 2008; since 2008, he has been a member of the Presidency of the Materials Research Society of Serbia. Between 2002 and 2012, he was the President of the Organizing and Scientific committees of the annual MRS-Serbia young researchers’ conferences "Science and Engineering of New Materials". Since 2016 is Secretary General of Materials Research Society of Serbia.

He is the editor of eleven conference proceedings and co-editor of an international monograph. As an author or coauthor, he published more than 300 bibliographic resources falling into various categories; out of them, 93 can be found in SCOPUS database and they have been cited more than 1900 times, h=26 (GoogleScholar: more than 2700 times; h=29). He is the author or co-author of three patents, while in the period between 1999 and 2004 he was the creator of two new technological procedures and two new products introduced into practice and commercial production.

He is an editor of Journal of Chemistry: Materials Chemistry (Academic Editor) and Advanced Journal of Chemistry-Section A (Senior Editor). He is a member of the editorial board of the journals Tehnika-Novi Materijali, OrientalJournal of Chemistry, Journal of Medicinal and Chemical Sciences, Nanoscience and Nanometrology.

Reviewer's national and international projects, > 100 international journals and more international doctoral dissertation.

Fields of interest: New materials and nanotechnologies in preventive and reconstructive medicine, pharmacy and food. Applied and fundamental research focused on the synthesis and design of small, hybrid and functional particles at the molecular level.
