ICCCI 2009 Conference, Kurashiki, Japan, September 6–9, 2009

International Symposium on Advanced Materials Design and Processing,
Osaka University, Japan, September 10, 2009

As a member of the Organizing Committee of the ICCCI Conference and a participant of the Third International Conference on the Characterization and Control of Interfaces for High Quality Advanced Materials and Joining Technology for New Metallic Glasses and Inorganic Materials – ICCCI 09, Dr. Olivera Milošević visited Japan between September 4 and 14, 2009. She also contributed to the Conference by suggesting an invited speaker: Prof. Fernando Rizzo of the Pontificia Universidade Catolica do Rio de Janeiro gave a very interesting and well received lecture on “Synthesis and Characterization of Nanostructured Titanates”.

At the ICCCI 09 Conference, held in Kurashiki on September 6 and 9, Dr. Olivera Milošević gave an invited lecture on “Aerosol Synthesis of Rare-Earth Based Nanophased Functional Materials” within the session Nanoparticles and Powders. The Conference was chaired by Professor Makio Naito (JWRI, Osaka University) and Professor Emeritus Kiyoshi Nogi (Osaka University). It gathered more than 150 participants from all over the world. The Conference topics included: Nanoparticles and Powders; Joining Technology for New Metallic Glasses and Inorganic Materials; Interface Characterization and Control; Energy and Environment; Smart Processing Technology and Materials Design, and about 140 presentations: 25 invited lectures, about 60 oral presentations and some 60 posters.

The first ICCCI Conference was held in 2003 with the aim to highlight the importance of interfaces in the processing of a broad spectrum of materials. It was at that time that an international forum for interface science and technology was established. The initiative resulted in a conference held triennially in Kurashiki, a small historical town in the Okayama Prefecture, under the auspices of the Osaka, Tohoku and Kobe universities, the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Hosokawa Company, American Ceramic Society, Ceramic Society of Japan, etc.

Dr. Olivera Milošević also gave an invited lecture on “Aerosol Synthesis and Characterization of Rare-Earth Based Nanophased Functional Materials” at the International Symposium on Advanced Materials Design and Processing, held within the Center of Excellence 21st Century Programme at the Osaka University on September 10, 2009. The Symposium included two sessions. The fist session Interface Characterization and Control featured lectures by Dr. Natalia Sobczak (Foundry Research Institute, Poland), Professor Fiqiri Hodaj (LTPCM, France) and Professor Antoni Tomsia (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, USA). The second session, dedicated to materials science, included lectures by Dr. Olivera Milošević (ITS SASA), Dr. Kevin Ewsuk (Sandia National Laboratories, USA) and Dr. Stephen Freiman (Freiman Consulting Incorporated, USA).
